This is the second in the trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean films. What is the key to this film’s success? We think it is Johnny Depp, he is once again front and centre here and very much the heart of the film. If you like Depp for his acting, or simply for his looks, you’ll enjoy this film. He is excellent in the role of the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow and is immensely watchable.
The story takes up where the first Pirates left off, Captain Sparrow has discovered that his dept the Davy Jones (played by Bill Nighy) is due while his Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elisabeth Swann (Keira Nightly) are under arrest for helping Sparrow to escape the death sentence placed upon him.
This story has a lot of adventure packed into the two hours; there is a magic compass which leads the user to where there heart most desires, the still beating heart of Davy Jones, voodoo priestesses with obscure information, and so much more. It’s a thrilling adventure in the true sense of the word. The nonstop action, including some soul harvesting for good measure, is fast paced and fun.
It’s no surprise that this film won and Academy Award ™ for best visual effects. The work that was put into this aspect of the film is stunning and well worth seeing a second time just to luxuriate in the effects themselves.
Depp is superb in this role. He seems to delight in playing the rogue and the role is made for him. The film itself is one of the top grossing films of all time. It is part of a very select club of films that have sold over $1 billion in tickets globally. That many people can’t be wrong!
